Willie realizes that Sam needs his help now, and as the play concludes, in a gesture of brotherhood, he promises Sam that he will control his temper and work on his dancing.
The lines concern his social reforms. Hally walks off not concerned about those days and suddenly turning into a white employer treating his black employees with total disregard. Then he recalls two girls, prostitutes, who used to live at the boarding house. He says if Hally needs proof he should come see the competition at the Centenary Hall in New Brighton.
Sam serves him soup at the table with comic books on it, and Hally calls them rubbish and has him take them away. He says his father can get better care at the hospital than at home.
Hally responds with characteristic enthusiasm and begins to see the possibility of basing his homework assignment on a journalistic description of the contest, thus joining both of his worlds.
Hally hangs up, then explodes, viciously venting his pent-up resentments. But at the end it is Willie who restrains Sam and Hally entering into a physical fight. Sam asks if it was with his trousers down, and, when he learns the answer is no, describes how black men are brutally beaten with a cane in prison.

Sam suggests the scientist Alexander Fleming, who discovered penicillin, and the two agree he is a great man. Sam reads comic books at a table. He says it would make a nice short story, but they would have to find a twist for the ending. Willie blames Sam for setting him up with Hilda as a dancing partner.
